Of Vern Li's Night Out and Other Stories (Updated)...
Sunday, June 28, 2009

No, Vern was NOT kneeing Keiron in the groin while trying to pull his pants off. Although, it does look somewhat like that. In actual fact, Keiron and Vern are good friends, as can be seen here.

Keiron looks strangely...pleased.

I don't know about his other friends though.

And that was the tone set for Vern Li's 23rd birthday bash, which took place at 7ate9, The Ascott. The bar, which was crazily warm even at night, was filled with revellers already starting to unwind with cold glasses of beer sweating in the humid air. I was the first to arrive, quickly followed by Vern and gang. Within minutes, the drinks magically appeared on the tables, prompting the party-goers to abandon their reservations and start the socializing.

This lady was having her hen night in the club, and mentioned that she was about to be married in two weeks. Congratulations, unknown lady!

Nice shiny disco balls.

Eelaine and Lynn making faces.

Not satisfied with making faces, they decided to wear huge glasses.

Then they got everyone else to make faces (except for Fang Chin, who came in a split second before the photo was taken)

A photo of the big-eyed people.

Posing prettily.

The Pouty Lynn.

Quek (whom I thought was selling Palms), Vern, Fang Chin, and Ren Yi.

Kwo Kuang, fellow photographer.

Polka-Dot Yen.

     The theme for the night was initially supposed to be "60's Retro", before it got scrapped along the way. It became an 'open' theme, where anyone could wear anything they wanted. A stalwart group of us, however, decided to try and get along with the first theme. I tried to appear as a 60's Beatnik, similar to this;

The Beatnik. Click here to read up on it. (Photo courtesy of costumesupercenter.com)

However, with the wrong beret, I just ended up looking weird.

Of course, carrying the bag didn't help either.

The Birthday Girl, by tradition, was supposed to end up drunk. In this photo, she was already high.

I was the only one who ordered food.

What does one do, when there are gallons of alcohol lying around?

...why, order coffee, of course. But that's just me.

Polka-Dot Yen and Mr. Abuthenhor.

Vern HAD to take a photo with her cameramen.

Lynn looking dainty on white chair.

Thats actually Weng Phoon carrying Mr. Abuthenhor.

Vern looks like a secretary who's about to rip a guy's clothes off. She didn't, of course.

Mr. Abuthenhor, suffering the aftereffects of being kicked?

The first sign that Vern was tipsy was when she returned Eelaine's bag, and said "I didn't bite it."

Everyone wants a piece of him.

Maybe not.

Deep in thought.

Cheryl and Jia Yi.

We bumped into Johnson, who got bitten by an ant.

The Compulsory Group Photo.

As always, much fun is to be had when Vern gets drunk. I wish I had a compilation of the things she said that night, for days when I need a good laugh.

There are approximately 390 photos from that night (from my camera). However, after the vetting process by Ms. Ng,only 99 photos are on Facebook, available for public viewing.

Makes you wonder what went on in the other 291 photos, eh? *wink*

Of Vern Li's Night Out and Other Stories...
Monday, June 22, 2009

A strange sight, indeed.

W ondering what in the world went on that night? Well, once the lady in question decides that the photos from my camera are suitable for public consumption, all will be revealed!

Until then, feel free to make wild guesses about the picture above.

Of Wandering Around the City...
Monday, June 15, 2009

Sometimes, one of the most relaxing things one can do is to walk through a loud, bustling city at night. KL, of course, qualifies as such a place, and there have been times when, after a long, tiring day at work, I take a stroll along the streets to unwind.

View from my window at dusk.

Call me crazy,or overworked, but there's something rather relaxing in immersing yourself in the ebb and flow of life in the dead centre of the city. Maybe its the bright lights that never dims throughout the entire night, or the sense of being peacefully isolated in a throng of thousands, but a jaunt down the Golden Triangle or slowly mincing about the food quarter brings about a sense of serenity, strange as it seems.

Listening to songs from Explosions in the Sky caps the whole lone-ranger-wandering-around-the-town experience perfectly.

So, if you ever feel pacing your shoes down Capital Square, just plug in your earphones, press play on your Mp3 player (preferably to post-rock music), and you're good to go.

Of Late-Night Chats and Coffee Sessions...
Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Ican't remember the last time I spent the day just talking to old friends, and catching up with the latest happenings in our very (now) separate lives. On Saturday night, Kwo Kuang, Lynn, Li Ping and I made our merry way to Leo's, for Li Ping to eat, and the rest of us to quaff a hot cup of coffee. Our conversations, as always, were rather loud and opinionated, and I have no doubt that by the end of the session, the waiter was ready to throw a bucket of water over us (he did spill some of my coffee while bringing it to the table)

Yes,the bread was green, and no, it wasn't pandan flavoured.

The fancy coffee.

Lynn, and the fancy coffee.

The next day, Wen Ching had organized a get-together for the high school mates. Upon meeting at the gathering point, Jackie took the lead and guided us to a bak kut teh spot in Mentari. After careful observation, Jackie realized that perhaps the place wasn't the same one that he had come to several years back, but since we were already inside, decided not to walk right out.

Jackie and Julie looking on, while Kevin speaks about his clubbing prowess.

Julie and I!

The Group Photo. Kevin, Jackie, Wei Suan, Wen Ching, Julie, and O-Wern.

Sunway Pyramid was the next stop, where we met Kuan Han, and Ven Nee. Someone suggested Daytona, and in we went.

Jackie, showing how its done.

Julie, showing how its not done.

The shopping mall was packed to the brim, so we walked out to Station 1, to grab that essential cup of coffee. At least, I did.

The Disgruntled Wen Ching.

The Clubber.

I had actually not seen some of them for at least 5 years, since we completed high school. It wasn't high school anymore, though, as everyone had more or less moved on, and continued to prosper and progress in their respective fields, and this was just a short stopover along a long road trip.

Who knows where we'll all be at the next stopover?

Of Warm Friday Nights...
Thursday, June 04, 2009

F riday night saw a whole bunch of us gather at TGIF, The Curve, for a sumptuous dinner. However, in the end, it was just me, Lynn, and Kwo Kuang who finally ordered food, and delightful, it was.

Of The Jaya Supermarket Collapse...
Saturday, May 30, 2009

Over a year back, I lamented over the fact that Jaya Supermarket, that old bastion of memorable Sundays and fun outings to Kathy's Toys was finally going to be closed down. It seemed to be the end of an era, and all those who had also spent a portion of their childhood walking along the rather dodgy (even then) walkways would probably feel the same way. Sure, the steps on the spiral stairway that ran from top to the bottom of the building was crazily small, but it was a place where we came to have pleasant family times. You can read about my lamenting here.

Jaya Supermarket, in its final days (file photo, 2008).

Cold Storage (file photo, 2008).

A few days back, I heard over the radio that the building, which was currently being demolished, had collapsed with several workers trapped inside, effectively sealing their doom. At last count, 7 workers bodies were recovered from the site, which, on Thursday evening, was cordoned off by the emergency units. It was drama all the way, with roads being blocked, and the authorities were contemplating evacuating the immediate area, in the event of further debris falling onto surrounding structures.

Although the building was already in the process of being demolished, it was still a rather sad event, to have the old, faithful building ring its last notes with such a tragedy. Now, the last memory most people would have of the place would be 'the building which several workers died in', rather than the fun weekend getaway that the PJ people would know.

     Click below to read TheStar's take on the event;

So, together with all the people who  memories of their time there, I bid thee, Jaya Supermarket, farewell.

Would anyone have anything to share about what they did in Jaya Supermarket as kids?
