A Very "Hancock"-ish Day....
Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Some of you may remember a post I had put up not too long ago, with the title, "The Malaysian Superhero". No, it wasn't for the Nuffnang tickets giveaway, rather, I thought I'd try and go a different direction, and instead, I joined the All Malaysian Bloggers Project (AMBP, for lazy typists like me) competition, the "Hancock: A Different Kind of Superhero" contest.
And, somehow, I won! (click here to read)
TheStar reception counter. As indicated by the sign.
So, on a Monday afternoon, with the aid of my cousin, Eric, I popped by TheStar office in Phileo Damansara, to claim my winnings. Michael Fredericks, the AMBP editor, wasn't around, but I managed to cajol the friendly Elizabeth into taking a photo with me.
She probably thinks I'm crazy, by now.
And the prizes were...
The Pièce de Résistance - The Sony Ericsson W660i! A Hancock (limited edition?) Namecard Holder......and In Season Double Passes! (of which I have no photo, since I've yet to claim these... I'll pop by the office again, ya?) Cool stuff. A million thanks to the good people of AMBP! Looking forward to joining more events/contests/community service activities with you all!
However, my association with Hancock (and his merchandise) wasn't exactly over yet, as I made my way to Cineleisure for the Nuffnang screening of Hancock. Thanks to my cousin (who DID join the Nuffnang tickets giveaway), I was soon lining up to get into cinema to watch the show.
Thank God for signs. Badges, to show your support. Thats Robb, busy handling the guests. I actually bumped into Melody Song, and Shino, as well as new blogger friends Mayszin and Andrew!
Familiar faces and new friends You know hes a pro, with that camera he slings about his shoulder. Strangely, I didn't snap away the whole night, like I usually do, and as such, have very few pictures. Nonetheless, it was a good movie. I've only been to Nuffnang's Pirates of the Caribbean movie screening before this, but watching the crowd in the cinema, with the flashbulbs blinking away, I'm pleasantly reminded about how a cinema full of bloggers is different from that of a normal crowd. A loud kudos and thanks to Nuffnang, for organizing the event! I'm sure there'll be more fun to look forward to, in the future.
I guess blogging has its perks. =) Now, it won't be too long before the wait for Batman: The Dark Knight, is over...

Bowling Mania! @ Sunway Pyramid
Saturday, July 05, 2008
I was about to text Karen to see if she was free to 'yamcha' on Friday, when the phone rang, and, lo and behold! it was Karen asking to see if 'boleh join' for dinner at Paris, SS2. Since I reached home from KL at about 9 something, I missed the chance for that dinner, but later managed to pop in at Mega Lanes, Sunway Pyramid, for a spot of bowling.
Anne, Ven Nee, and Weng Lum Julie, myself, Karen Daniel (looking good as always), myself, and Kenny (also, err, looking good) I was persuaded to join them for a round or two of tossing a heavy urethane ball down a long strip of lacquered wood. Despite the fact that I bowl like a penguin, I still had fun (because I live in denial).
Daniel, joyfully manning the console. Julie has ball. My funky (and not so pleasant smelling) shoes. Anne has the spirit. Yeah. "My legs look longer, in this picture..."-Julie Kuan, 2008 Julie, and Weng Lum. Julie, myself, Anne (who has the spirit), Ven Nee I am pleased (because I live in denial) Credit goes to Julie, for this motion shot. Thanks! =) Karen wonders about the score. Despite the fact we lost, I still had fun. Because points don't count (new philosophy for the night). And my wonderful teammates will support anyone through anything. It was great seeing the fellows, like Anne and Daniel, whom I've not met in years (ok, maybe a year), and still managed to retain their sense of humour, after all this time.
Well, if I can't make it to KLIA on Thursday (AND if you read this), take care, Ms. Siah! I know you'll have a fun time, and take care of yourself! See you in December!
May you always run as far as your legs can take you.
In the meantime, I should brush up on my bowling.

Of Lonely Stations and Facebook Glitches (Part 2)...
Friday, July 04, 2008
For some strange reason, my original post for this went missing. Here's a recap of what I wrote (not exactly verbatim)
After travelling to and fro from Subang to KL every morning, I've come to realize that the railway station is a pretty depressing place to be. When you're there at 6.00a.m., with the sun far from rising, about 3 hours of sleep behind you, and a whole day of grueling work to look forward to, the railway station is quite a downer.
The Depressing Railway Station The (Also Slightly Depressing) Sunrise Over Sentral As I was telling Eelaine (whom I've bumped into twice on the monorail), seeing a friendly face among the sullen crowd is really a sight for sore eyes. At rush hour, everyone looks like a bear thats about to bite your head off. I guess travelling via public transport does that to a person.
For the benefit of the Subang girl stuck in the U.S., heres proof that the infamous shopping mall is still, well, infamous.
The Summit is still standing, don't worry.
On another note, I was browsing Facebook the other day, when I noticed something peculiar.
Do you see anything odd? Its this. I'm quite sure I wasn't at the Zoo, and that Mei Ling didn't accidentally upload my profile picutre into a zoo album. Strange things can happen on Facebook too.
So far, all random ramblings. Stay tuned for updates of more recent events like Joshua and Ze Xin Turn Older, Fun @ A&W, and Bowling Mania! @ Sunway Pyramid!

Goodbye Shu Ling @ Wendy's Bistro, PJ
Sunday, June 29, 2008
When we say Wendy's, one would immediately think about the burger joint in Sunway Pyramid that serves humongous drinks. The lesser known Wendy's is actually a small, cosy, diner in Dataran Sunway Mentari, and it doesn't serve humongous drinks, rather, its where you can find oily, dripping, glistening pork belly and ribs.
Wonderful.
Have you been here?
We bid farewell to Shu Ling, who was going back to her home town in Penang, and decided to sample some pork during this auspicious occasion.
Kim Mi and her knives

Kenrick sometimes doesn't have enough sleep

How not to like?

The oil looks like it can catch fire anytime
We were about to take a cousin photo, when Kim Mi, who had just come back in from the washroom, decided to take part in the fun =)...
...the official cousin photo

... and the official Group Photo (with some people missing)
Take care Shu Ling! Have fun in Penang!
For those of you who like oily, glistening meat, you might also want to head on down to Meaty House, in Taipan. They serve some good pork chop (no negative connotation, or implicit meanings here)
If you're in the mood for dreamy piano music, and pictures of tantalising meat, click here to view Wendy's Bistro's Home Page.

The Malaysian Superhero...
Thursday, June 26, 2008
Its refreshing to watch the painfully bright armour that our superheroes wear get tarnished somewhat, in the form of the hapless Hancock. The moment we see Will Smith answer 1, who plays the titled superhero, throw a whale answer 2 into the sea, only to see it capsize a sailboat, we know that this movie is going to be a whole different take on the superhero scene.
Not the most graceful of heroes
Contrary to the popular image that the superhero has to come out smelling clean after every encounter, Hancock, the trash-talking, besotted drunkard is a superhero with an attitude problem.
And that just goes to show that he's human! Heck,he would fit right in here with us, the land of nasi lemak and teh tarik, where everyone has at least a slight fascination, and some degree of awe, towards superheroes.
If Hancock appeared in Malaysia...
Wouldn't it be great to learn that, despite all their vaunted powers, they're just humans like us too? It gets rather stale seeing Legolas come out of every battle looking as if he just took a bath, or Superman get shot with a gazillion bullets and never gets a scratch. We want to see the nitty-gritty, the real-life drama, and the human behind every superhuman.
Clark Kent has had one too many to drink at Zouk Even monsters want some attention from the land of bloggers (spotted along Jln Bukit Bintang) The movie brings hope to all of us, who aspire to be heroes (or heroines), but lack the moral fibre or immense righteousness (read: kiasuness) to become one. When we look out for our heroes, we don't look for squeaky-clean, spotless, Boy Scouts, but rather, down-to-earth, sensible men and women with the right mindset.
I can be a hero too...
Who knows, we could be looking for YOU.

Nuffnang Wild LIVE Blogging - (Not So) Direct From Sri Hartamas (Anymore)
Saturday, June 21, 2008
Well, I'm here, at the glitzy Modestos/Rain, in Sri Hartamas, attending the Nuffnang's Wild LIVE Blogging event. The main concept of the day is to blog directly from the scene, so, here's my take on that particular requirement...
With any luck, this is what you could have seen that night...
| Nuffnang's Wild LIVE Blogging - Live Video Feed! (from Soon Seng's Point of View)
<<<<< Didn't work as well as it should
To use the video feed, click on "Menu" (its there, on the bottom left hand corner), followed by "Live Streaming Video". Wait a few moments, and you're good to go! *please note that there will be a time lag, influenced by your connection speed, as well as mine, over here | About an hour before the actual thing, I dropped by Centrepoint, Damansara to meet up with Lauren and Sue Ann (who had just returned from the UK), to return her curtains, and chat. After the delightful catching up, I sped off to Sri Hartamas, where the show was about to get underway...Myself, Lauren, and Sue Ann, at Secret Recipe
The event started with Liang excitedly calling all the bloggers to gather in front of the stage. After the necessary speeches by the organizers, food was served, and the members of the Nuffnang community started to mingle (I could see the various types of antennae and rabbit ears move about the floor)

Random fact: When I was a wee bit younger, I actually played football with Liang once.
He is definitely in the mood. Pam, Sheng Mae, Jentz, and Kellster.. Jentz was in my church, and Kellster was my high school senior! (more "Its a small world" moments) Kellster, myself, Sheng Mae Robb! Dedicated to making the event a success... The time had finally come for me to post my "live" blog. When I pulled out my webcam, and started fiddling, however, I realised that I could only see a blank black screen, with some spots on it (apparently cheap webcams like mine don't work too well in the dark) To those of you who actually logged in to view the webcam feed, a thousand apologies.. I hope you were entertained by the scrolling marquee on the right and didn't die outright from boredom.
The crowd, in their various costumes..
Kenny Sia (yes, that IS a Pooh head under his arm), myself, and Ringo When my (useless) webcam stream hung because of an "internal server error", I noticed that Min Li also had some difficulty posting up her live entry.(The ladybird costume was her own work of art!)
It was about this point that, after all the games had been played, and the winners of all the various categories chosen, came the announcement of the winner for the "Live" Blogging Contest. The initial drum roll came on, and when they announced the winner... she didn't appear. I guess she had already gone home slightly earlier. So, after a short debate, they decided to award the prize to the second in line, which, strangely enough, was...me. The crowd is enthusiastic... Stolen from Shaolintiger... Thanks a million! Despite the fact that my webcam streaming idea could have been thrown into the dustbin, I managed to get my hands on the prize! God IS watching from above...haha... The man himself, Timothy Tiah! (looking exhausted) Pinkpau, in another ladybird dress! (I just noticed the pink elephant hat behind... it looks like I'm supporting it with my head) The night finally drew to an end, I made my goodbyes, and drove off. Halfway along the way, however, I noticed 3 fellows that I recognized from the event, trying to hail a taxi. After offering them a lift to the nearest LRT station, I experienced another "Its a small world" moment...
Kul and Frankie were studying in Trono, where another friend studies. Kul is from Malacca, and is my housemate's brother's friend. (yes, its a small world indeed =) Nice meeting you guys! Yup, good food, free flow of drinks, young - energetic - opinionated people, wild costumes, and a whole deal of fun.
I guess thats what blogging is all about. =)
"Live" Blogging Pays Off! (the fruits of my (failed webcam) labour)
Many thanks and congratulations to Nuffnang, for an incredibly fun time, and a succesful event! Hope to see you guys again in the future!
