Of Small Burgers and Increasing Appetites
Monday, June 04, 2007

        I was just having a MSN conversation the other day with Joyce, about food, when we came across this topic;

        It was then that I thought to myself. Hmm.. Kinda true..

        Maybe my appetite just increased, and I need to eat more these days.

        Or perhaps chicken around the world have shrunk.

       God only knows.

How To Reformat a Computer and Install Windows.. The Soon Seng Way
Saturday, June 02, 2007

        Recently, Joyce asked for some assistance in reformatting a computer, and reinstalling Windows XP. I sent over a file with photos I took, detailing the steps to accomplish the task. Since I already have the photos, I thought I'd just post them up. There are many ways to do the same thing (reformat and reinstall), but I thought this would be an easier way to do it.

*disclaimer: Soon Seng shall not bear any responsibility for any complications that may arise through this tutorial. This includes software and hardware malfunction, and possible coffee addiction. If uncertain, please conduct this exercise in the presence of an experienced person*

Warning! For non-coffee-lovers, please ignore all references to coffee and coffee drinking contained within the article. Thank you!

Soon Seng's Guide to Reformatting Your Computer and Reinstalling Windows

Checklist

First, make sure you have done the following;
1. Backed up your irreplaceable files.
2. Prepared the operating system CD (in this case, Windows XP) and the relevant drivers needed to run the computer.
3. Have at hand a sachet of Nescafe 3-in-1 Coffee, Regular (Strong will do as well)

Make sure you have coffee

Instructions

1. Insert the Windows cd into the cd tray (not the diskette drive, that'll just ruin your cd), and restart the computer.
2. During boot-up, press and hold the F8 key (its between the F7 and F9 key)
3. A list of sources that you can boot-up from will appear. Use the arrow keys to select the CD boot-up option.
4. You will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD. Press any key.
5. The blue screen will appear, and the drivers will load. This will take some time, so just wait until the process is complete.

You will see this screen (without my face and blog address at the bottom)

6. While loading the drivers, you may boil a kettle of water.
7. After the drivers have loaded, you will then see the Window's Setup screen. Press Enter to continue.

Press Enter!

8. It will bring you to a License Agreement document. Press F8 to continue. (if you don't agree with the License Agreement, press Esc, and consider using Linux)
9. Right after that, you'll come to this page. Since you'll want to install a fresh copy of Windows, press Esc.

Press Esc!

10. The setup will then ask you to choose which partition to install into. Normally, this will be the C: drive, so, select C: and press Enter.

Select C: and press Enter

11. This drive would normally already have Windows installed on it, thus, Setup will ask if you want to overwrite the existing Windows. Press C to continue.

Press C!

12. The Setup will now bring you to the format options page. Choose "Format the partition using the NTFS file system" option.

Choose the highlighted part..

        And voila! Thats it! Just follow the instructions, and fill in the configuration forms as prompted!

13. Pour the hot water boiled earlier into a cup, and mix with the contents of the coffee sachet. Wait till slightly cool, then enjoy.

To prevent injury, wait until the temperature goes below boiling point before consumption

Gluttony In Bangsar.. How We Ate 25 Dishes of Seafood
Thursday, May 31, 2007

        About a year back, I went to a seafood buffet, in One Bangsar. When the promotion came back, this time 'round, I excitedly informed my fellow unimates about it, and, of course, there were several takers. The way the buffet worked was, you could order any dish from a list that they gave, any number of times, except for  the crab, scallops, and sharksfin soup, which you could only order once. This would be the sort of deal that sends people like Kohilan and Weng Hoe running to restaurant. Here's what happened..

The signboard at the front of the restaurant

Proudly proclaiming that I reserved 5 seats

        Here, at this point, we were all hungry, and ready to take on anything that they brought.

Still hungry, and waiting to whack everything in sight

        So, we ordered out first round of dishes.

3 Very Nice Dishes

        Very well, since we were on a roll, we quickly summoned the waitress, and placed another round of orders.

6 Nice Dishes

        Here, we were starting to show signs of being full.. But, being a buffet (and cos we're Malaysian), we just had to make the most of our money.

Slightly near the brim

Happy with large amounts of food

        So we ordered another round of 15 dishes.

15 Immensely Huge Portions of Food

Soon Seng: "Can still eat or not?"
Weng Hoe :"Of course!"

        At this point, our Malaysian (kiasu) spirit drove us to wipe off the rest of it, although I could almost see prawns come out of Joshua's eyes, and sotong spring out from Weng Hoe's ears.

Maybe we might have overeaten

        After spending about 3 hours, and RM38++ per person, we finally decided to stop eating and move out of the place. VERY slowly.

Nice group photo

Gluttons, all of us.

        Not bad for RM38++.

All Souled Out..
Tuesday, May 29, 2007

        Weng Lum was due to fly to the US on Thursday, so, seeing as how we wanted to send him off on a nice tone, coupled with Sue Ann's craving for carbonara, we made  trip to Souled Out, in Desa Sri Hartamas. Here are some pictures to ogle at.

We were the first to arrive

Looking at the prices, I immediately knew what I wanted; Cheese Naan, RM6.00

Cheese Naan and Spinach (with Cheese) RM6.00 + RM5.00

Weng Hoe, Me, Sue Ann, Tony

Weng Lum, Sue Ann, Joshua, Weng Hoe

People laughing at something

The cinnamon stick that came with the coffee

Although it looks like my face is made of plastic.. its actually not

        After dinner, we sat around for some time to decide what to do next (note: Yenli still hadn't arrived) So, we finally made a group decision to watch a movie at Cineleisure, the Curve. Alas! To our dismay, there were no movies to be watched, (unless anyone recommends Pocong! 2). A trifle disappointed, we went down to the fountain area and sat down to decide on our next course of action. (this is where Yenli arrived)

It looks like Ze Xin was inspired to rap

"The A is missing.." - Jitfu

Yenli looking forlorn.. (cos she had to pay RM1 for parking)

We sat for so long that we started becoming spastic

Sue Ann and Yenli were quick to react

        We eventually ended up in McDonald's, outside the Curve. To make my RM2.15 sense worth it, I ended up drinking a Milo, refilled it with coffee, then refilled it with tea, then refilled THAT with tea. I am kiamsiap, I tell you.

Ronald McDonald and Friend

Sue Ann couldn't stop laughing.. =)

        I like spinach. Especially when its mixed with cheese.

Snapped along the way to Seremban (pic courtesy of Kwo Kuang)

    The day started with me driving down to Seremban, together with Kwo Kuang, in the wee hours of the morning. After detouring slightly to drop Kwo Kuang off at Chui San's place, I made my way over to pick Joyce up, before heading to Senawang for breakfast. Since Joyce had been craving for the curry laksa there for a few months, she was rather happy to be breaking fast over a steaming bowl of noodles and curry.

Senawang curry laksa

Joyce is happy when eating Senawang curry laksa

    After a short trip to Giant, we went over to Jusco, and had a brownie and coffee, and before we knew it, it was time to leave. So, at about 4.00p.m., I retrieved Kwo Kuang, and we trundled back to Subang. Sigh.. these trips are too short and far between.

Joyce and I in car

    At about 5.30p.m., I met up again with Kwo Kuang, Spike, and Kohilan at Tanjung, our meeting point before heading to Nero Teca, KL. Here's a little background story to explain the whole thing;

    "It was about a year ago, during a conversation with Matthias, an Italian guy studying in my uni, when I asked, "Hey, where's the best place to get Italian food in KL?". I assumed that since Malaysians would be the best guide to Malaysian food overseas, an Italian guy would know Italian food. He immediately said, "Nero Teca". Throughout the whole year, Kohilan and I have been tossing the idea of going there about, but somehow, never got around to it. On Friday, however, over a cup of long black, we made a snap decision to go over there on Saturday night, and just call everyone along."

    So, after sending out sms-es, 6 people agreed to have dinner together. At 5.40p.m., however, Weng Hoe sms-ed, and asked,

"Hey, so what's the plan ah?"
"Err.. we're meeting in Subang at 5.30"
"Ha?"

    Ok, so we knew Weng Hoe would be late. Unperturbed, we made our merry way to KL, and despite not really knowing the way, Kohilan made several turns, and before we knew it, we were already there! (we actually made it by 7.20p.m.)

Nero Teca

Quaint and homey setting

An artistic shot of the wall (the blurred heads are Kohilan and Spike)

    Since we were early, we waited for Yenli and Weng Hoe for the customary half-hour, before we made our orders. It was during the waiting period that Yenli called, and said that she was stuck in a jam in front of Times Square, and didn't really know the way. Kohilan gave her directions and we continued waiting. About another 15 minutes later, Yenli sent an sms saying,

"I know how to go d"

    And with that, we somehow knew that Weng Hoe would arrive first. True enough, Weng Hoe DID arrive first. (haha.. alright, Yenli, you weren't that late)

Weng Hoe ordering

Yenli's Arrival

    Not long after, Yenli laughingly came in, and we continued eating. I must say, we were the youngest people there, (and undoubtedly the most jakun). The place was filled with expatriates who probably had 6 houses in Malaysia and 7 cars, and ate bread off golden plates. The place hummed with quiet conversation, and jazz music. Until we arrived, of course. Here are the foibles that singled us out as students.

1. Upon arrival, there were only 4 of us guys seated around the table. The head waiter probably thought we were queer (gay).

2. Spike ordering an antipesto;
    "I would like an antipesto."
    "Very good. And for your main meal?"
    "That is my main meal"
    The head waiter stared at us one kind after that.

3. Soon Seng (me), while listening to the house specialties;
    "So, how much IS your suckling pig?"
    The head waiter stared even more one kind

4. Weng Hoe, seeing the powdered cheese that came with the spaghetti;
    "That one for mine." (loudly)
    "Its for everyone, actually." (head waiter)

5. Weng Hoe, upon finding plastic in his spaghetti;
    "Oi! Got plastic in my spaghetti!" and laughed wildly.
    Everyone stared at us one kind.

We were happy about the food..

..very happy indeed.

5 Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place

    The food, however, was excellent, albeit rather small in quantity. Surprisingly, the price was rather reasonable, and the tax didn't cause us enough sadness to hang ourselves, so, we were rather contented when we left the place.

    Another gathering that turned out happily, despite the last minute-ness of it all.

Spotted on the way out of KL

    We'll be ordering the suckling pig, next time round.

Nuffnang and Pirates of the Carribean 3..
Saturday, May 26, 2007

    It was (I think) about a month ago that I received a call from Nuffnang, who informed me that I had won two seats for the premier screening of Pirates of the Carribean 3: At World's End, at the Cineleisure Cineplex in Damansara. To get those seats, Nuffnang bloggers were required to post a blog entry with the title, "Why is the rum gone?". (if you scroll down this page, you'll actually see the entry.. now, everything is explained..)

    So, finally, the 24th of May arrived, and I drove down to Cineleisure with Kim Mi, who had just come home from work. Picking our way through the crowd, we finally reached the Nuffnang counter, where I met Cher (a Nottingham University student as well...) After redeeming our free popcorn, we managed to find seats near the front (but thankfully, not the front row) which wasn't too bad. After all, we went back without aching necks.

    It started with a speech from Nuffnang founder Timothy Tiah
.Shortly after that, the movie began, and three hours later, it was ended. The movie was entertaining, and Johnny Depp, as always, succesfully came across as the mad pirate with hidden agendas. I must say though, I felt the ending was rather sad (lets see who agrees with me after watching it) After the movie was over, we came out, and made our merry way back home.

    Timothy Tiah giving a short welcome

    This photo is proof of my blatant disregard for instructions

    Me, Kim Mi, and a skull hanging over my head, after the show

    Good thing the people paying their parking tickets were efficient

    A souvenir!

    Its the same souvenir!

    Next movie to look out for: The Simpsons

    A thousand thanks to the people at Nuffnang for the tickets!

    p.s. Joyce, we'll catch a movie soon, ya? Your choice of show.. =)
