Killing the Unkillable Fish, and Other Stories...
Saturday, February 20, 2010

One of my goals when I started working was to brighten my workplace with a personal item/flower/knick-knack. After talking about it for a year, I managed to buy a cheap aquarium, complete with pebbles, decorative stones, and anti-chlorine solution. All I needed was a fish to drop into the water, and so, went over to Damansara to pick up a pair of blue platys. Unfortunately, due to mishandling and a rather rough ride in my (then) Kancil, the platys bellied up and died within 3 days. Traumatized, I decided to let it go for a while, until Liping convinced me to get back on the bicycle and try out a hardier type of fish: The Guppy.

Lunch at Pyramid, before the purchase of The Guppy. Other than the fact that it looks like mud thrown on a slice of bread and served on a plate, it tastes pretty good.

The Pharmacist/Zoologist. Plays mum to earthworms, dogs, cats, vicious water turtles, and hermit crabs.

Here is the aquarium (RM20.00 for pebbles + shiny stones + fish food + antichlorine solution + manual on how to rear fighting fish. Water FOC)

So, after a round of shopping, we purchased 4 guppies, some decorative items, and an Old Man Fishing Without A Rod for myself. Happily carrying the plastic bag with the two hapless fish swimming around inside, I set the Old Man Fishing Without A Rod (consequently named Marcus/John/Peter) in the center of the plastic box, tipped the two fish in, and happily brought them to the office, where I proudly told my colleagues that I had 2 new guppies.

Old Man Fishing (Rod sold separately)

The tank in all its glory.

Tank, in the office (the water isn't as dirty as it looks).

A day later, I found the guppies lying still and tanning their bellies under the flourescent lights.

Yes, my fish, that can survive in drains, died. This is how they look like when out of the water and lying on a piece of tissue.

In my defense, I found out that Liping's pair had also kicked the bucket, so I blame it on the fish themselves, for not being hardy. My tank will just be Marcus/John/Peter's home until I figure out how to sustain life on my desktop.

On a happier note, we met up with Li Wen and Will in KLCC today, just before she went back to work. It was a cosy affair in Chilli's where we went around giving each other brief updates about our lives.

This is Will. We last met in Malacca.

And this is Li Wen. Also last seen in Malacca.

This is Yenli, who came dressed to the nines.

We had a satisfying round of food and gossip (at the same time), before the couple wandered off to catch a movie. Unperturbed, we continued refilling drinks (in my case, coffee. Chilli's and McDonalds are two of the few places that actually refill their coffees) and talking until evening beckoned.

When one uses a 50mm lens, either he/she walks further backwards, or people get cut out of the photo (in this case, that's Sue right at the corner).

Will takes brilliant photos, and manages to get everyone in the frame.

Have a safe trip back, you two! And hope to see you guys again, soon.

Now, I'll just have to find a fish tough enough to survive the office environment.

old man fishing looks more like old man tfk-ing hahahahaah pls get him a "rod" soon.

i think the damn fishes just got too used to having O2 in their water. or maybe they couldn't take the stress of migration. oh well, dont give up yet!
