The Malaysian Superhero...
Thursday, June 26, 2008

Its refreshing to watch the painfully bright armour that our superheroes wear get tarnished somewhat, in the form of the hapless Hancock. The moment we see Will Smith answer 1, who plays the titled superhero, throw a whale answer 2 into the sea, only to see it capsize a sailboat, we know that this movie is going to be a whole different take on the superhero scene.

Not the most graceful of heroes

Contrary to the popular image that the superhero has to come out smelling clean after every encounter, Hancock, the trash-talking, besotted drunkard is a superhero with an attitude problem.

And that just goes to show that he's human! Heck,he would fit right in here with us, the land of nasi lemak and teh tarik, where everyone has at least a slight fascination, and some degree of awe, towards superheroes.

If Hancock appeared in Malaysia...

Wouldn't it be great to learn that, despite all their vaunted powers, they're just humans like us too? It gets rather stale seeing Legolas come out of every battle looking as if he just took a bath, or Superman get shot with a gazillion bullets and never gets a scratch. We want to see the nitty-gritty, the real-life drama, and the human behind every superhuman.

Clark Kent has had one too many to drink at Zouk

Even monsters want some attention from the land of bloggers (spotted along Jln Bukit Bintang)

The movie brings hope to all of us, who aspire to be heroes (or heroines), but lack the moral fibre or immense righteousness (read: kiasuness) to become one. When we look out for our heroes, we don't look for squeaky-clean, spotless, Boy Scouts, but rather, down-to-earth, sensible men and women with the right mindset.

I can be a hero too...

Who knows, we could be looking for YOU.
